The Rise of Fly-tipping During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Over the past year, the country has had a legal “Stay Home” policy imposed on three separate occasions. This has resulted in the rise of opportunities for both organised and opportunistic criminals to exploit deserted town centres and commercial estates. The most recent statistics from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs revealed almost one million cases of fly tipping in the UK between April 2019 and March 2020. It is feared the next set of figures will be even worse following the pandemic.

The effect of the pandemic on fly-tipping

The country experienced a dramatic rise in fly tipping since the Covid-19 pandemic swarmed the UK in late March 2020. The temporary close down and restricted access to many recycling centres, collection points and waste disposal sites has meant that individuals and organised groups have ceased the opportunity to dispose of waste on the side of roads, on industrial and housing estates. During lockdown one, fly tipping increased by a massive 75%, with cities having much higher rates, Camden in London reporting 128 incidents for every 1,000 people during the year.

Environmental issues imposed by fly-tipping

Fly-tipped rubbish is not only just an eyesore, it also imposes serious harm to local communities and their environments. Disposing of waste in a non-controlled manner attracts the attention of rodents and insects which can then spread diseases. The illegal dumping of waste on public land can have a real impact on local wildlife, it can affect their homes, their health and have a knock on effect to the entire food chain.

Dumping rubbish can have a huge impact on the natural, social and economic environment. Potential chemicals in such waste which can damage farm lands for animals and contaminate soil that can ruin crops. The financial burden it places on the taxpayer is huge, the cost of clearance to local authorities in England is more than £10 million per year.
